Week of 5/24

This is the last week of Mental Health Awareness month and I wanted to share a simple practice that can improve your mood and reduce your stress level. Every day this week (or longer), I want you to list three things you're grateful for. You can use these sentence starters too:
  1. I’m most grateful for ___________________.
  2. I’m so thankful that___________________.
  3. I love when ___________________.
Regardless if the things are big or small that you're grateful for, people who are grateful are happier and healthier. Studies have shown being grateful increases your positive mood and decreases negative emotion. It also helps with an overall positive outlook on life and satisfaction. Share some things you're grateful for in the comments!

Week of 5/17

This week I wanted to share a fun activity that you can do it at home and it will help you relax too!
1. Take an empty water bottle
2. Fill the water bottle with water
3. Add desired color of food coloring
4. Add glitter, sequins, or other decorations that are waterproof and float
5. Close the top and tap top shut
6. Shake it up and watch the glitter settle. Use as needed to calm down.

Week of 5/10

This week I wanted to share 2 breathing techniques that can help you calm down and manage any stress or anxiety you're feeling. It is important to learn techniques that can help you maintain good mental health and breathing exercises are a great tool.
Volcano Breaths
Pretend your hands and arms are like lava flowing from a volcano. Start with your hands in front of your heart, with palms touching. Keeping your hands together, reach straight up and breathe in. Separate your hands and move your arms down to your side and breathe out.
Belly Breath
With your mouth closed, breathe in for four seconds or you feel your whole belly fill with air, all the way down to her belly. I always say breathe in like you're smelling a flower. Hold in the air for four seconds. Slowly blow the air out until it’s all gone and your belly goes in. I say you should breathe like you're blowing out a candle.

Here's a video you can watch too:

Week of 5/3

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! For the month of May, I will share a different mental health tip for you.

This week's tip is: Talk Openly About Your Feelings.

I know if can be hard to talk about your feelings, but once you do you will feel better. Also, once you talk about how you're feeling then you can work on whatever is bothering you. I think this quote from Mr. Rogers says it well:

" Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary."

Hopefully there are people in your life you can talk to: friends, parents, siblings, teachers. Remember, I am also always here if you need someone to talk to.
