Week of 1/25

Staying active has many benefits. Being active not only helps you physically, but positively affects your mental well-being too. People who exercise feel less stressed, sleep better, have more energy, and have sharper memories than people who do not exercise. People who are active also feel more positive about themselves and their lives. Even just a little bit of exercise can help!

It's hard to stay active now that it's cold and people are inside much more of the time. Here are some ways to incorporate being active into your life:

  1. Schedule regular walks outside, if safe to do so, and weather permits.
  2. Set your work-station on a high counter or table so that you stand while working.
  3. If you live in multilevel complex, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible.
  4. Walk around while on the phone, or on video calls with loved ones.
  5. Every time you go up or down the stairs, take two laps just because you can.
  6. Schedule your planned workouts in advance. Even just 10 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day really adds up!
  7. Make a rule to take a lap around the house every time you do a certain activity, such as every time you use the restroom, refill your water, finish a class, etc.
  8. Do 10 squats/lunges/pushups every time you complete an assignment, or every time you get a drink.
  9. Take a lap or run up and down the stairs three times during every commercial break when watching TV.
  10. Take a brief stretch break every hour on the hour.
  11. Try a new virtual workout class on YouTube (here's a good channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNmjpJa5O7AAQ7fxV0_w1dQ)
  12. Keep your phone in another room so that you get some steps in going to check your messages.
  13. Turn on some of your favorite tunes and dance!

Share in the comments what you do to stay active!

Week of 1/18

Sitting at your computer all day can be challenging. Here are some stretches you can do in your chair to help you stay focused and relax. These stretches can also be used in school, during testing, or anytime you need a break.

Week of 1/11

Whether you're feeling anxious about returning to school, stressed about the unrest in our country, or just need a break from your long day, here are some breathing techniques to help you take a deep breath and relax. Use them anytime and anywhere.
SNAKE BREATH
Breathe in, pause briefly, then breathe out slowly while you make a hissing sound for as long as you can.

USING YOUR HAND TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH AKA MOUNTAIN BREATHING
Put up one hand, palm facing out and fingers spread apart. Place the index finger of your other hand at the base of your thumb and breathe in while you move your finger up one side of your thumb. Move your finger down the other side of your thumb and breathe out. Do the same thing with the remaining four fingers, and take deep breaths in and out as you move your finger. After you’ve reached the second side of your pinky finger, you’ll have done 5 complete deep breaths.
You can also do this with a close friend or trusted adult. Have them spread their hand out and use your finger to trace their hand and do deep breaths. Or do the opposite: spread your hand out and have them use their finger and trace yours. You can do deep breaths together!

COUNT TO  10
  • Breathe in ONE
  • exhale TWO
  • Inhale THREE
  • Exhale FOUR
  • Inhale FIVE
  • Exhale SIX
  • Inhale SEVEN
  • Exhale EIGHT
  • Inhale NINE
  • Exhale TEN

SQUARE BREATHING
Start at the bottom right of the square
Breathe in for four counts as you trace the first side of the square
Hold your breath for four counts as you trace the second side of the square
Breathe out for four counts as you trace the third side of the square
Hold your breath for four counts as you trace the final side of the square
You just completed one deep breath!

Week of 1/4

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a relaxing and restful break!
The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the past year and think about what you want for this upcoming year. Here are some questions to think about or write about to help with your reflection:

  1. The best thing I accomplished this year
  2. The one word to describe my next year will be ________, and this is why…
  3. How can I describe last year?
  4. How might I use my journal to keep track of my resolutions?
  5. Something that I put off doing last year that I want to do this year
  6. My biggest goal for next year
  7. The most important thing that happened all year
