Week of 1/25

Staying active has many benefits. Being active not only helps you physically, but positively affects your mental well-being too. People who exercise feel less stressed, sleep better, have more energy, and have sharper memories than people who do not exercise. People who are active also feel more positive about themselves and their lives. Even just a little bit of exercise can help!

It's hard to stay active now that it's cold and people are inside much more of the time. Here are some ways to incorporate being active into your life:

  1. Schedule regular walks outside, if safe to do so, and weather permits.
  2. Set your work-station on a high counter or table so that you stand while working.
  3. If you live in multilevel complex, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible.
  4. Walk around while on the phone, or on video calls with loved ones.
  5. Every time you go up or down the stairs, take two laps just because you can.
  6. Schedule your planned workouts in advance. Even just 10 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day really adds up!
  7. Make a rule to take a lap around the house every time you do a certain activity, such as every time you use the restroom, refill your water, finish a class, etc.
  8. Do 10 squats/lunges/pushups every time you complete an assignment, or every time you get a drink.
  9. Take a lap or run up and down the stairs three times during every commercial break when watching TV.
  10. Take a brief stretch break every hour on the hour.
  11. Try a new virtual workout class on YouTube (here's a good channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNmjpJa5O7AAQ7fxV0_w1dQ)
  12. Keep your phone in another room so that you get some steps in going to check your messages.
  13. Turn on some of your favorite tunes and dance!

Share in the comments what you do to stay active!
