I know that remote learning has been difficult for all of us. Parents, I want to thank you for all of the patience and understanding you have given me since the school year began. Your help and encouragement at home with your children has been a great service.

Students, I want to thank you for putting forth your best efforts in working at home, where there may be many distractions, including helping your siblings while trying to do your own work. And let's not forget the struggles we all have had with technology.  You have made great progress under challenging circumstances.

I would also like to thank the Henry community for all of the efforts in making remote learning capable for all of us. By attending workshops and meetings, as well as participating in school activities. Your work is making all of our successes happen.

I would again, like to thank all of you for your support and prayers, with what turned out to be a very difficult end to 2020, for me and my family.

So I would like to wish all of you a very happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. I will see you next year, 2021. I pray that it will be better than 2020.

I have also added my Remote Family Plan that includes daily schedule for my Homeroom and Work that was given for the week.

I hope this is helpful and keeps you informed about or class and the activities that we are doing.

September, 2020
Dear Students, Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
I would like to welcome everyone back for the 2020-2021 school year. I know we are starting school under unusual circumstances and therefore, it is going to be very important that we all stay informed and organized this year. Unlike in the past, most of your work will be done online through Summit and Google Classroom and although we will not be in the building, you will still need some school supplies (see list below).
We will continue using the Summit Platform as a means of assigning lessons, Focus Areas, projects and homework for you to complete. Also this year, CPS is requiring that all schools utilize Google Suite tools to facilitate remote learning. I urge you to opt-in to receive daily or weekly Guardian Summaries from Google Classroom. These summaries will help you keep track of completed, missing and upcoming assignments; announcements; and questions recently posted by teachers.  If your child/children are having difficulty, find out how to help them and most importantly celebrate their accomplishments throughout the year.
This past spring, CPS did not require students to log in or report attendance. This year, students are required to log into Google Meets by 8:15 AM and actively engage in remote learning in order for attendance to be recorded. Accordingly, I will report attendance on a daily basis.
To start the school year, our number one priority will be to establish a consistent means of communication with families. Please complete this form to ensure that all avenues of communication are up to date and working. I encourage all parents/guardians to visit our school’s website and visit the new, parents page on CPS.edu.
We will return to our regular grading system during remote learning this year, which means standard letter grades will be issued based on mastery of content.
More information about Remote Learning will be coming in the next few days, I’m sure. I look forward to working with all of you this school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know through email or Google Classroom.

Sincerely,
Mrs. L. Cantu   lacantu@cps.edu

Welcome everyone to a brand new school year. Although this year is going to be an unusual one, I am sure that with a lot of patience, flexibility, understanding and teamwork, we will all get through it. We are all in this together.

This year, I will be teaching 6th grade Humanities and Ms. Kim and I will be teaching 7th grade Humanities. Some of you already know what Humanities is, but for those who do not, all it is, is a combination of ELA and History. All of our units will encompass all the Language Arts content (Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking) as well as the Social Science content. Through the Summit platform, you and your child will be learning in a new way. At first you may find it confusing. That's OK! I will provide lots of support for all of you.

You may be able to get into ASPEN and check your classes. You might even be able to get into Google Classroom and see A LOT of folders. Don't panic, just click on the Chicago Reading Framework folder and I have left you a message. Let's see who can solve the challenge!

In the meantime, you will still need some school supplies. So here is the list:
  • Pencils & Pens
  • Pencil sharpener/erasers
  • 8 composition books (2 for each subject)
  • Crayola crayons
  • Crayola colored pencils
  • 2   Elmer’s glue sticks
  • Scissors/pointed tip
  • 1 pack of Multi colored construction paper

So enjoy the rest of your summer vacation and I hope to see all of you on Tuesday, September 8th. School begins at 8:15, so be sure you are logged into your homeroom teacher's Google Meets so you are not mark absent.

Update

4/29/2020

Hello Everyone:
Just a couple words to say I miss you all. I am so proud of all of you that have been working hard to keep up with your work. It is important that we try to finish the school year strong. We only have about 7 weeks left. That's not that much more to go. Keep working hard.

Continue to check Google Classroom for your assignments. Remember that you need to work on all classwork, Reading, Math, Science, History, and your specials. This is important! You will be graded in each subject area for the 4th quarter. Until CPS gives us clear direction on how you will be graded, they are clear on this, all students will be given a grade in EVERY SUBJECT. When CPS lets us know how the 4th quarter will be graded, I will let you know.

Remember you will be an 8th grader next year! So exciting!

Humanities Work During School Closing

Hello Everyone!
Hope all of you are doing well and staying safe at home.
Please make sure to check into Google Classroom every week for ELA and History work that you can work on at home while we are out or school.

So far I have posted ReadWorks and IXL work. You can also go on Summit and take notes for Focus Areas so when we get back you can take the assessments. If you decide to do another book project, choose a book from home that is Lexile level appropriate (not Dr. Seuss). You can use the same project sheet as you received before. I will be posting other projects on Google Classroom later today.

I am going a little stir crazy and cannot wait to get back to the classroom. April 21st cannot come soon enough.

Miss you all, stay healthy!

COVID-19 School Closing Message

As you know, we will not be returning to school until April 21st. In all my years teaching, I have never experienced anything such as this before. My hope is that all of you and your families are safe and healthy.

Some of you have been working on the assignment that had been given the last day of class and I have answered many, many emails.  If you were not in school that day, then your work is in the main office, just stop by between 9AM to 1PM to pick it up.  As of now I only have one grade left to put into ASPEN, which is your IXL that was given that last Monday.  Some of you have been asking for extra credit, I have posted extra credit on the Google Classroom site for Humanities.  I will be checking my email everyday to answer any questions or if you just want to talk.

Remember that the school will be handing out food everyday from 9AM to 1PM.  Please take advantage of this assistance.  If you need anything, please call the office or email me and we will do our best to assist you.

Please keep checking this website, your emails, and Google Classroom for updates.  Until then stay safe, stay healthy, and stay busy.

Cantu
