Social-Emotional Learning  4/27/20

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

Last week we talked all about FEELINGS. The activities I posted about FEELINGS can be done any time!!

When you are having strong feelings, you can  create a spot in your house called a COOL DOWN CORNER.
Step 1: Choose a SPECIAL spot in your house!
(I choose a chair in my living room!)
Step 2: Go to your special spot - this is your
COOL DOWN CORNER!
Step 3: Choose a COOL DOWN STRATEGY!
  • Take 10 deep breaths
  • Give yourself a hug! Or hug someone or a stuffed animal!
  • Count to 40
  • 10 Push ups (on the floor or on the wall)
  • Hand squeezes
  • Play with a toy or fidget
  • Draw a picture
  • Make up your OWN! (Listen to music, yoga, whatever!)
Then try it!
Step 4: When you are "cool" - reflect! What helped you cool down? Why? Do I still need more time to cool down? Talk to someone or write it down on a piece of a paper.

Attached (bel0w) to this post will be how to make one! :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week, let's talk about BUCKETS!
Buckets?! What do you mean, Miss McCabe??
We ALL have a bucket!
Everyone carries around an "invisible" bucket! You, your mom, your dad, your grandma, your grandma, EVERYONE!
Our buckets have a purpose - they hold your good thoughts and good feelings about yourself!

You (and others) feel very happy and good
when your bucket is full! :)
You
(and others) feel sad and lonely
when your bucket is empty :(

We can fill each other's buckets!

So... Let's talk about FILLING UP SOMEONE'S BUCKET!
One of my FAVORITE books, "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?"
Will tell us how!
Below is the link to listen to the story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EuemNAo6XE

Are you FILLING up a bucket?
Or are you DIPPING into a bucket?

We want to be bucket FILLERS!
We DO NOT want to be bucket DIPPERS
!

This week, let's be BUCKET FILLERS!!!
Try these activities EVERYDAY this week!

MONDAY:
Listen to the story and discuss with someone!
-What was this story about?
-Why is filling up someone's bucket important?
-Can we fill our own bucket if we dip into someone else's?
-What are some ways to fill a bucket?
-What are some ways in dip into a bucket?

TUESDAY: Bucket FILLERS and Bucket DIPPERS
-Find 2 bags or bins or buckets from around your home!
-Label one: BUCKET FILLERS and label the other: BUCKET DIPPERS
                                                      (Picture below)
-Take turns writing down ways to FILL a bucket on little pieces of paper
and put them into your BUCKET FILLERS!
THEN
-Take turns writing down ways to DIP INTO a bucket on little
pieces of paper and put them into your BUCKET DIPPERS!
(Ideas for fillers and dippers bel0w if you need some help!)

WEDNESDAY: "I am a BUCKET FILLER When" Activity.
-Draw or trace a bucket! (examples below)
-Use or trace the stars and hearts to write on!
-On each start or heart, write a different way you can be a
BUCKET FILLER! Then add them to your bucket.
-Color your bucket however you'd like!

THURSDAY: RATE THE STORY!
-Watch/Read the story
-How would you rate this book out of 5 stars?
-Use the RATE MY BOOK page at the bottom of this post
OR Draw 5 stars at the top of a piece of paper.
Color in how many you would give this book out of 5.
-Write about your favorite part

FRIDAY: PRACTICE

-Today is pretty simple... PRACTICE some BUCKET FILLING!!!!!!

I can't wait to hear all about how you are filling your own bucket and the bucket of others at home!!
Feel free to Send me pictures of you FILLING BUCKETS!!!
Or share with me when we meet on google!

Have a wonderful week and fill some buckets!

PACKET CONFUSION

4/22/2020

Hi everyone!

A few parents have reached out to me with confusion surrounding the Learning Packets for Diverse Learners.

These packets should still be available for pick-up in the office.
However, some parents were given the wrong packets.
Please double check with the office that they are packets for Miss McCabe!

Attached to the packets were supposed to be a note from me. It seems that these weren't attached, uh-oh!  That's okay, we will get it right next time! :)

New packets will be available in the coming weeks - I will send a REMIND text when they are available for pick-up.

Here is the note from me explaining the packets and at-home learning :

Dear families,

Welcome to the At Home Learning Packet!

This packet includes 3 weeks of work from home assignments. Each daily assignment consists of 5 pages of math, reading, sight words and more! Please plan to work for about 60-90 minutes or 1.5 hours a day.
This packet is designed to serve as a review and extra practice. However, please monitor your child as they complete the assignments and help your child review any pages that they find challenging.

OTHER IDEAS TO EXTEND LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE DAY:
  • Name a letter, number, or sight word; then have your child find it on mail, magazines, or packaging around the house.
  • Have your child write notes, letters, or signs. Encourage them to sound out words instead of asking them how it is spelled.
  • Choose a sound. Have your child find something in the room that starts with this sound. For an extra challenge, have them find something that ends with that sounds instead!
  • Encourage mathematical thinking with questions like, “If I give you 4 more crackers, how many will you have now?”
  • Encourage your child to make predictions and then see what happened. Ask, “What do you think will happen if we ________?” then ask, “What actually happened? Was it the same or different from your prediction?:

If you are able, please continue to check my webpage for videos and lessons. There you will find videos of me teaching as well as social emotional learning lessons. http://patrickhenryes.cps.edu/room-117-ms-mccabe

You can email me or message me on the REMIND app anytime!!
Email: Lmccabe@cps.edu     REMIND: “Miss McCabe K-2”

Thank you!
Miss McCabe

THE WAY WE FEEL!!

4/20/2020

Hi Friends!

This week... let's talk about OUR FEELINGS!

With so much change and uncertainty surrounding all of us right now,
it is SO important to talk about how WE FEEL!

Emotions describe how we are feeling throughout our day.
Emotions are a GOOD thing!
Sometimes emotions can be HARD. That's OKAY!
When we TALK about how we are feeling and use helpful strategies,
we can FEEL OUR BEST!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's read a book called "THE WAY I FEEL"

This story is about the EMOTIONS we feel throughout our day.
EVERYONE has emotions!
Sometimes, we feel LOTS of emotions in the same day!

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITPUxVQ6UIk

Take 15 minutes every day this week to do an activity using this story!

MONDAY and TUESDAY: DISCUSS THE STORY!
1. Watch/Read the story!
2. Pause the video -Ask and answer the discussion questions:

Cover: What do you think this story is about?
Page 2: How do they feel? What is one time you felt silly?
Page 4: How do they feel? What is one time you felt scared?
Page 6: How do they feel? What is one time you felt disappointed?
Page 8: How do they feel? What is one time you felt happy?
Page 10: How do they feel? What is one time you felt sad?
Page 12: How do they feel? What is one time you felt angry?
Page 14: How do they feel? What is one time you felt thankful?
Page 16: How do they feel? What is one time you felt frustrated?
Page 18: How do they feel? What is one time you felt bored?
Page 20: How do they feel? What is one time you felt excited?
Page 22: How do they feel? What is one time you felt jealous?
Page 24: How do they feel? What is one time you felt proud?
At the end:
Why do you think it is important to understand our emotions?
Can understanding our friends and family member's emotions help us? How?
How do you feel right now?

WEDNESDAY: FEELINGS CHECK-IN
1. Watch/Read the Story
2. Name the emotions you are feeling through the day today
and write them down on the CHECK-IN Page. (BELOW)
Don't have a printer? Make/Draw your own check in page :) It's easy-peasy!
Some FEELING words:
Sad
Happy
Excited
Bored
Frustrated
Silly
Angry
Tired
(See below for more!)
3. After you've NAMED the emotion, ask yourself,
"Why am I feeling this way?" or "What is making me feel this way?"
4. If it is an emotion like "sad" or "angry," ask yourself,
"What can I do to help MYSELF work through this emotion?"
"Do I need alone time?"
"Do I need a hug?"
"Do I need to cry?"
"Do I need help from an adult?"
5. Share your check-in with an adult!

THURSDAY: EMOJIS!
1. Watch/Read the Story
2. Draw the EMOJIS for how you FEEL throughout your day today!
Example below!

FRIDAY: RATE THE BOOK
1. Watch/Read the Story
2. How would you RATE this book out of 5 stars?!
3. Draw 5 stars at the top of a page! Color in how many you would give this book.
4. Write and draw about your favorite part!
Example Below!

Please feel free to send me and your other teachers pictures of you working on
these activities on the REMIND app!
We would love to see your hard work!

Use these strategies all the time!
Have a wonderful week and remember - we ALL HAVE FEELINGS!!

Love,
Miss McCabe

Hello Friends!

Today, I want to talk about EMPATHY.

What IS empathy?

Empathy is the ability to understand how someone else is feeling.

This is when you have to “put yourself in someone else's shoes”
and to understand the way a situation might make them feel.

Empathy helps us be KIND and COMPASSIONATE people.
We can practice empathy by asking ourselves, "How do you think that would have made ME feel if I was in there shoes?" and "How do you think what you did made that person feel? Would you want to feel that way?"

Here are a few videos to watch that help explain empathy:

Chaper 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENIB2H3S_oQ&t=182s
Chapter 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6WNRMj4970
Chapter 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRjYgfFnrL4

Practice kindness and compassion EVERY DAY, even when we are stuck at home!

FOR PARENTS:
https://www.parenttoolkit.com/social-and-emotional-development/advice/social-awareness/developing-empathy-in-kids-ages-5-8

That's all for today my friends!
Have a wonderful Friday!

Love,
Miss McCabe

Hey there!

*LEARNING PACKETS COMING SOON - STAY TUNED!*

In the mean time, let's talk about SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING!

Social-Emotional Learning, or SEL, gives students the tools to excel in and OUT of the classroom! At Henry, we teach explicit SEL lessons to all of our students to ensure that they make progress in emotion management, situational awareness, and academic achievement.
WHY SEL?! This video will explain!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikehX9o1JbI

One program that we use at Henry is called Second Step. Through Second Step, students learn invaluable skills that help them navigate their way through school as well as their community. The program uses age-appropriate games, activities, and media engage students and set children on a path to lifelong success.

We know that ALL of us have A LOT of feelings about what is going on right now and that is OKAY!! We can use the tools from school and Second Step to help us manage our feelings and continue our SEL growth. We can continue this growth even while we are away from school. Second Step can be used AT HOME!

Below are links to Second Step Songs! Students are familiar with these songs :)
Use these YouTube videos to sing along with when you are feeling a certain way!
