Principal's Message:

We hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving.  It’s always fun to be able to spend a few extra days with our loved ones and friends.  The winter break will be here soon as well but in the meantime there’s a lot of learning to accomplish in the next few weeks.  

We will have visitors at our school on Wednesday, November 29th. The Office of Teaching & Learning  with other school leaders and administrators will be coming in the morning and the afternoon. Our next LSC meeting is on Tuesday at 4:30. It was nice to see a number of teachers and parents attend.  We hope to see more of you at our upcoming meetings.

Attendance Rocks!  Congratulations to Rooms 109 a.m., 112, 102, 104, 101, 103, 302, and 307 with the highest attendance for last week.  Classrooms will receive 5 Hawk Eyes!

Henry PBIS:  Habit 3:  Put First Things First:  Work First Then Play
  • “I do the things I have to do before I do the things I want to do.  I stay focused on what I am doing.  I try to minimize distractions and regroup if I get off task.  I spend my time on the things that are most important.”

Week of November 13, 2017

Principal's Message:
We had another busy but productive week.  It’s hard to believe but we are quickly approaching the Thanksgiving Break. I’m sure all of us are excited about it.
This upcoming week is an important one for all us because we get an opportunity to share with each of you how your child is progressing so far this year.  We will be communicating the following:
1. Attendance 2. Grades 3. Benchmark Scores 4. Student Goal Setting - Spring It’s also a wonderful chance for us to share and promote all the great things happening at our school.  
Parent Engagement - Please sign up for the following:

  1. Parent Workshops - Balanced Literacy, Summit, Breakthrough
  2. Parent Portal - (Goal - Each classroom gets at least 50% of parents to sign up)
  3. Parent Tours - We will be starting PL/Balanced Literacy tours so they can see all the great work in the classrooms. Our goal is to conduct 1 or 2 tours by the end of the 2nd quarter. Please let your child's teacher know that you are interested and sign up.
  4. Quarter 1 Awards November 17th (1:30 p.m. K-3 and 2:30 p.m.4-6)
  5. BAC PAC (December 14th at 2:00 p.m.)/LSC (November 28th at 4:30 pm.)
  6. Book Fair - Annex  Room 118
Deadlines/Expectations - Please encourage your parents to complete or remind them of the following:
  1. Attendance Visit with Administrator - (for students who are on the chronic attendance list )
  2. Lunch forms - ( We need 100% completed - It affects school funding)
  3. Uniforms - (white shirt and blue pants - jeans ok. Henry spirit wear forms will be available during parent teacher conferences in the main office)
  4. Student Fees - (2nd notice letters will be distributed to those families who have not paid our $30 school fee)
  5. Medical Compliance - (Notice letters will be distributed to those students who are not compliant)


Coats for Kids: The free coat give away with CPS and their partnership with Wells Fargo Bank has been confirmed for November 16th. We will have the brief rally in the gym at 10:00 a.m.. Due to space, only primary students will participate in the rally but all the students will be receiving a free coat.



Parent Workshops:  We will have the following workshops on Parent Teacher Conferences. For every workshop a parent attends, they will receive a raffle ticket.  Two prizes will be raffled off:   $50 Best Buy Gift Card and $50 Menards Gift Card.
  • Coffee with the Principal: State of the School Address 11:30 a.m. (auditorium) (Facilitator:  Mr. Gutierrez) We will be conducting our annual ‘State of the School Address’ on  Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium. This is a great opportunity to learn about Henry School! The topics covered will be SQRP, school programs/initiatives and goals for the year. We will have coffee and cookies!
  • Home School Connection Workshop for K-1 (Makeup sessions)  12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Location:  Library and 206) (Facilitators:  Ms. Dorado and Mr. Aragon)
  • Summit Learning (Personalized Learning Time)  1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  (Location:  Library) (Facilitator:  Ms. Munozmaciel)

To be sure that students are coming to school these next two weeks in November (especially next week Monday and Tuesday), we want to include a “Thanksgiving Spirt Week”
  • Tuesday, November 14th:  Gratitude Day - During lunch, students will sign a large sign that will thank our parents for attending Parent Teacher Conferences and the Wells Fargo Team for our Coats.
  • Thursday, Novmeber 16th:  Coat Day/50th Day of School (see schedule below) Play some 50s music or do some activities that incorporates 50.  (Great number of the day/math talk activity!)
  • Friday, November 17th:  Quarter 1 Assembly/Gratitude Statement - As a classroom, identify what you are thankful for as a Henry Student.  We will share your class gratitude statement during the Quarter 1 Awards Assembly.
  • Monday, November 20th:  Gobble Up a Good Book - Take sometime today to drop everything and have students cuddle up with a good book of their choice.   We will pair up with our  upper grade students who will read to our primary students.  Below the following rooms will be paired up.  Please work with each other to identify location and time that will work best in your schedule to have students “Gobble Up a Good Book”.

  • Tuesday, November 21th:  Annual Henry Turkey Trot:  Join the Specials’ Team and your classrooom to trot around our school for our Annual Henry Turkey Trot!
Scholastic Book Fair:   The Scholastic Book Fair provides us with the opportunity to purchase books using Scholastic Dollars.  This is a great fundraiser for our school and we usually can get around $3000 worth of Scholastic Dollars for our fairs during the school year.  With last years Scholastic Dollars, we were able to purchase spanish leveled readers for our bilingual program and the novel set of Wonder for some of our 4th graders this year.   Please see the schedule sent home for your child's assigned time.  Students who have money will be allowed to attend the bookfair at their scheduled time.   Thank you to our parent volunteers for supporting our bookfair.


Sports:
  • Girls on the Run:  Practice every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:15 a.m.  (Tuesdays with Ms. Garner/Thursdays with Ms. Munozmaciel)
    • The GOTR 5K will be held on Saturday, November 18th.  Please let Ms. Garner know if you are interested in running the race.  
  • Henry Turkey Trot:  We will have our Annual Henry Turkey Trot on Tuesday, November 21st.  This is a fun event.  Thank you Mr. Tomsheck for conducting this trot.  Further details will be forthcoming.  

Henry PBIS:  Habit 3:  Put First Things First:  Work First Then Play

  • Habit 3 Activity:  Morning Meetings~  Morning Meetings, our school-wide Tier 1 SEL support, is a great way to share how we are putting first things first.  Morning Meetings has a built-in structure that can support the culture and climate in your classroom.  Through the four components of the Morning Meeting (greeting, sharing, group activity, and morning message), students can share and demonstrate how they will complete the tasks to have a successful 2nd Quarter.
  • Student of the Month will be held this Friday, December 1st. Who is that student in your homeroom demonstrating “Habit 3:  Put First Things First: Work First Then Play.

Week of November 6, 2017
Principal's Message:
We hope you had a nice weekend in spite of the weather.
We want to thank you for all your support during the 1st quarter. As we begin the 2nd quarter, we continue to ensure we maximize learning for all our students. In order to reach our goals as a school, we need to continue to support each other to make sure all our students reach their growth targets for the school year.
Don’t forget - Our partner, LEAP Innovations, will be bring some educators interested in learning about our systems and
structures that we have implemented so far as part of our Breakthrough Grant Program. They will be visiting during the
morning on November 8th. Also, the Office of Teaching & Learning is sponsoring school visits called "PL In Depth" and
they have confirmed the Henry School visits for November 17th and 29th.
Thank you for a productive 1st quarter. Let’s make the 2nd quarter even more successful.

Letters have been sent home regarding 5+ unexcused absences.  Please be sure to turn in notes for absences.  It is very important that students come to school on a daily basis.  Our goal as a school is to be above 96%.  
Direct Effect Charities (Santa​ ​Letters):​ ​ 
In partnership with Direct Effect Charities, students have written persuasive letters and will receive a generous gift from "Santa's Elves" who have received the letters and are donating gifts to our students.   They will open these gifts the day before the Winter Break.  Further details will be coming.
Parent​ ​Teacher​ ​Conferences:​ ​ ​
Conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 15th from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.  Please be sure to schedule a conference time with your child's teacher. 
Parent Workshops:
For every workshop parents attend the month of November, they will have a chance to win a $50 gift card from Menards or a $50 gift card from Best Buy.  The times are as follows:

For the month of November, students are focused on Habit 3.  Be sure to talk to your child about what they can do to minimize distractions when they get off task.  
Community:
Irving Park Community Neighborhood Association will have their community meeting on November 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Henry School's auditorium.  Their main focus is to identify concerns and business brought up by the community. Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month.
