LEVEL 4 (mid-end of kindergarten)

SKILLS:

Building Words
Consonant Digraphs
Sight Words 3
Categorizing Words 1
Picture-Phrase Match

TRY THIS AT HOME:

1. Go on a sound treasure hunt. Pick a sound, like /p/, and see how many things your child can find that begin or end with that sound. Afterwards, have him/her describe these objects with adjectives, like “I found a shiny and flat pan!”

2. Watch the movie Rio! The 2011 animated film Rio takes place in Brazil, where parts of the amazon rainforest are located.  As you watch the film, write down the characters names.  Pause and think of adjectives to describe the characters ("large, orange, pointed beak") and underline the adjectives.  Ask your child to sound out the character's names or the animals.  As you watch Rio, sing lines from the songs and find the rhyming words!

3. ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT: Help your child research facts about the country of Brazil!  Consider looking up the official languages, capital, main exports, national flag, foods, holidays, and more!  Make a poster and compare/contrast this country with others!

SKILLS:

Simple Word Chains
Medial Vowels
Picture-Word Match 1
Sight Words 2
Sequencing

TRY THIS AT HOME:

1. Read together! Find consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, like lap and hat, and common sight words, like said and come, for your child to try reading on his/her own. If your child gets stuck on a CVC word, help by sounding it out, one sound at a time. When you finish reading, have your child tell you what the story was about!

2. Watch the movie Brave: The animated film Brave takes place in the Scottish hills!  Look for landmarks and scenes in the movie that look like your Lexia level.  Write down the characters' names while you watch the movie and then describe them with adjectives!  When the movie is over, sequence the plot (beginning, middle, end).  Bonus: can you determine the moral (central message) of the movie?

3. ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT: Help your child research facts about Scotland!  Consider looking up the official languages, capital, main exports, national flag, foods, holidays, and more!  Make a poster and compare/contrast this country with others!

Ending Sounds
Beginning Sounds & Letters
Short Vowel Sounds
Combining Adjectives
Sequencing

TRY THIS AT HOME:

1. SPELL TOGETHER: Practice spelling consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, like hop and run. Then, have your child tell you how the words are related (hop and run are both actions!) or have him make a sentence with the words (It is fun to hop and run!).

2. WATCH A MOVIE SET IN PARIS: There are many great animated films that take place in Paris!  You could watch Ratatouille, The Hunchback of Norte Dame, The AristoCats, or Madeline!  As you watch, sound out the character's names, make up rhyming words, describe them with adjectives, and discuss the moral of the story!  Once you finish, have your child draw the beginning, middle and end of the story.  What was the major problem in the movie and how was it solved?

3. ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT: Help your child research facts about France!  Consider looking up the official languages, capital, main exports, national flag, foods, holidays, and more!  Make a poster and compare/contrast this country with others!
